Target Troll Proves it's All or Nothing With Corporate Social Media

The article commented on the event of a Facebook user posing as Target and leaving sarcastic and rude comments to unhappy customers. The article suggested that Target keep a closer watch on their Facebook and other social media accounts. While I do agree with this, I think that Target is somewhat not to blame. It is incredibly easy to do a Google search of a JPEG image of a company logo, put it as your profile picture, and start posing as a different person. Sometimes Facebook encourages it by having special "Make your profile picture your celebrity doppelganger" days. The account was only online for 16 hours which shows you the big impact. I think that social media accounts should be more careful on what they allow as profile picture. Facebook workers could increase the rate of verified accounts and shut down unofficial accounts. Same goes for any company. The social media services and companies should band together to limit this problem from happening.

  1. I think after reading this article you are one hundred percent right about how Target as well as companies using social media should pay more attention to the social media that they use. Yes the man was only on for 16 hours that is still an incredible amount of time and as it said in the article a hacker or impersonator can do so much damage in just that little amount of time. With the advancement in social media it is only a matter of time before this problem grows to even more of a concern so I believe that yes companies should start to monitor their social media accounts better but along with that individuals will need to begin to confirm who and where they are engaging on social media.

  2. I did not even know that this had happened! Shows how much I am on social media. I think that you are absolutely right in the fact that Target should not be held accountable and there really should be a change on Facebook's end of the deal. Many accounts get hacked everyday and people have many new pages made in their names when they have no clue about it. This in fact happened to my aunt and they were trying to get information out of her "friends" so they could use it to commit fraud. I think some new ways of making harder to get on to social media or new ways to monitor would be helpful.
