Bailey Davis-Module 1-Article #3

Survey: Teachers wary of bringing social media into classrooms

http://getschooled.blog.ajc.com/2015/09/02/survey/

This article is about the majority of teachers that are very hesitant to incorporate social media into the class room. One of the biggest reasons that teachers do not want to use social media in the classroom is because many of them think that it is unfair to students that do not have cell phones. However, in today's culture having a phone is something is seen as almost essential. The next reason teachers are hesitant to use social media is because they feel that it might be a distraction and not productive to the class. A couple suggestions that are given are to have specific guidelines on social media for students and to try to use closed social media websites such as a blog. One positive from this is that it may help parents become more involved in with their child's school.

I chose this article because as social media becomes more prevalent, I think it is important that kids understand how to use it and the impact it can have, for good or bad. Obviously it is important enough to have a college class on it, so I think there is a good argument to teach it at a younger age too.

  1. Bailey,
The article you chose was interesting, and I found it quite interesting. So many children are running around with cell phones, that you would think that it would be almost impossible to not be a distraction in the classroom. I saw a post on Facebook the other day, where a teacher made all of her students place their cellphones in a 'calculator' holder in the front of the classroom. If the students didn't give up their phones, then they were not accounted for during role call. I agree with the suggestion that social media can be used in the classroom, as long as its on a closed media website. However, I'm not sure allowing cell phones in classes is a great idea for K-12 students. I think that it would cause too much of a distraction, and keep them from paying close attention to their teacher's activities.

  2. I really liked this article because of the tie it had to schools. I also found an article about how social media is in schools. The need for teachers to incorporate these mediums within their teachings may not be ideal but times are progressing. At the very least teachers can educate themselves and their students about the ever advancing footprint of social media. Great article.
