Logan Yager- Module 3 Post #2

http://www.cnn.com/2013/11/21/living/social-media-positives-teens-parents/

This article discusses the positive effects that social media can have on relationships. It states that most teens feel like social media improves their relationships rather than damaging them. This contrasts what is often reported in the media. Most news outlets only focus on the negatives associated with social media, but according to the group Common Sense Media one in five teens believes that social media greatly increases their relationships and confidence while only 4% stated it decreased them.

The most important thing as a parent is to make sure that you talk to your teen so they know the potential dangers of social media. If it is used correctly then it can be a great outlet for making friends and boosting confidence. The article directly focuses on "selfies" and the positive results that can come from them. One mom mentioned in the article stated that her daughter's Instagram pictures were full of positive and encouraging comments. This in itself shows the potential of social media to be used for good.

Overall, this article brings up fair points for the positive side of social media. It's important for teens to be smart and responsible so that it doesn't become a problem.

  1. I think that it is interesting that social media can have the feeling of an improved relationship. I agree that moms and dads should talk with their kids about the dangers that can come with social media. When I was growing up I never had any kind of talk about it. I think that is because social media was just starting.
