I have read several articles that stated that Facebook
leads to a more narcissistic attitude due to the fact that we can hide who we
really are. This article reflects the
findings of a study concerning Facebook, narcissism and empathy. Facebook does have features (photos) that
lead to a more narcissistic attitude; however, there are more instances of people
using Facebook for connecting with and empathy toward other people.
When I really think about this article I wonder if the
change (narcissism to connecting) has more to do with Facebook being used by an
older generation instead of teens and young adults. Teenagers still have a mentality of life
being all about them while with age and maturity come a better respect for
others and their life situations.
Facebook provides a unique opportunity for people to create a character for themselves that might only show the good aspects of their life. Even in the seeking of empathetic comfort from people can be narcissistic because people can post statuses or pictures that don't actually convey the true relationship someone had with a person. I do see that most attributes of the connections on Facebook and the types of interactions can be linked to the societal/generational norms rather than just an issue of Facebook/social media.
