Social Networking Sites Fueling Stalking, Report Warns

http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2012/feb/01/social-media-smartphones-stalking

This article discusses the threat of stalking that is only increased by living our lives out on the Internet. When people put their location on social media sites every time they relocate it serves them up on a silver platter to anyone that may be trying to find them. There were also instances in which women have been attacked by previous partners because they failed to change a password for their social media accounts and their ex's have been able to track their actions and read all of their messages. Just as the article mentioned, these are just a few of the powerful tools that stalkers have through social media. It is extremely important that privacy settings be personalized to fit ones needs. It is possible to shut off the GPS tracking through social media accounts, but it is not automatic so it needs to be done manually.

  1. Great article! I feel as though there are people that think "those things" won't happen to them. People need to be a lot more careful when posting anything on their social media. If someone is determined to hurt you, or steal your identity or whatever the case is, they will do it. Just like on smart phones, now you have to make sure your location is off because when you posts pictures, it shows exactly where you are. Even those swap and talk sites are dangerous. Unless you know the person, meet in a public place and even bring someone along with you. This world is pretty scary and its sad to say, but I don't trust anyone!

  2. Excellent article to bring to our attention. Stalking is surely something that not everyone thinks of when they log onto Facebook. As our world accepts and pushes social media in every facet of life, whether it be tv shows, movies or music artists. Not only are these things included on social media but they are there to be viewed by mostly all. Meaning that if you were to be stalked your likes, hobbies and locations will all show up for any inquiring eye. To some stalking is just as easy as turning on their computer monitor. This article does justice to remind everyone of the potential dangers of an internet life.
