I found this article to be rather interesting. It is an article about Facebook “stalking”,
or why people seek out, or search for the ex via social media. There was a
study behind interpersonal electronic surveillance (Facebook stalking), done by
researchers from The Ohio State University and the University of Hawaii. The
researchers studied relationship factors relating to commitment in a
relationship, the higher commitment to a prior relationship, resulted in a
higher level of distress after the breakup. Therefore, individuals experiences
higher distressed, the more social media stalking occurred. I think that this
article coincides with this week’s module, since it pertains to relationships
and social media. I would assume that many individuals have “Facebook stalked”,
after breaking up with a significant other.
Psychologically, Facebook and social media play an interesting role in the process of moving on. Jealousy is exaggerated because one ex partner can post things to directly anger the other ex, while there is a sense of empowerment for someone that can "unfriend" or "unfollow" an ex. This article has some relation to the article I posted as well in that the mobility of social media presents another level of trust since it can be accessed everywhere.
