Although this article does not give the specific research, it does state that too much social media has been shown to cause depression. Although I am a supporter of theory that too much social media can cause depression, I am skeptical to say that it causes it. Do I think it can cause it, or more specifically can aide in the onset of depression? Yes, very much so. But I digress because that was not the main focus of the article. The article really gives a few basic tips to help keep social media in a healthy position in our lives.
The author gives a brief list of suggested ways to help keep our virtual interactions in check so we can maintain a healthy balance of virtual and actual relationships. Setting a goal for the reasoning one would use social media (SM) is the first tip he gives. This is soo practical and simple. If the reason we use it boils down to "so I can hear about more peoples lives" then that should be a red flag, and leads into another tip: limit the time spent on SM. American culture has extremely low demand (or need) to set limits and boundaries. The culture is get as much as you can, as fast as you can, as easily as you can, but we are starting to learn that excess is not always the most satisfying. So the idea of putting a limit on how much time is spent on SM is health and is a good way to stay balanced with our virtual and actual relationships.
I can totally see how social media can cause depression. For one, using the computer all day does not lend itself to productive activities which can make one feel more important and accomplished. Also, online relationships are more shallow and less fulfilling for the participants. Eventually, the combination of these two things can cause a feeling of being disconnected from life and the real people in their lives. It is easy to feel like one has many "friends" online, but its pretty easy to tell that they wouldn't really be there for you if you needed them.
