Blog Post #3-Sasha Mettenbrink

This post looks at how social media and technology is affecting people's social skills. Social skills are extremely important when it comes to getting a job whether it is during the interviewing process or after a person gets a job and has to communicate with their customers. As it states in this article that often times when you walk into a room people are often times looking at their phone, laptop, tablet, or another type of electronic device instead of talking to other people in the room. This is relevant to us because we are going to begin looking for jobs soon, which will require us to have communication skills in order to interview well and get the job. After getting a job though we also have to be able to excel at the job by being able to communicate with customers and also coworkers effectively.

  1. This is something that I have noticed a lot with college-age people. Walking through the halls at UNK, almost everyone I see waiting for class has their head down and is looking at their phone. It seems like a way for people to avoid talking to people they don't know. This could be good practice for them that they are missing for their future careers and lives. As the article states, in the real world communication is so important, so this could be a negative to social media and the popularity of it. However, it is the responsibility of professionals to put themselves out there despite the distractions that are in the way.
