Module 5 – Post 2 – Instagram

Module 5 – Post 2 – Instagram

Instagram is a social media site specializing in photo and video sharing.  The site launched in 2010 and currently has over 300 million users and over 150 million monthly active users.  In 2012, Instagram stated that 58 photographs were uploaded and a new user added every second.  Since that time there have been over a billion photographs uploaded.  The site is free; however, you must be at least 13 years old to have an account and there are restrictions on the type of photo that can be uploaded.  The restrictions are pretty standard and pictures that are banned are associate with violence, nudity, and sexually suggestive.

This is a site more popular with people using smartphones due to the ease of taking pictures and uploading them immediately.  In fact, you must use a smartphone or tablet to create an account. This would be a great site for the Kearney Area Children’s Museum as the site has proven to be very popular with the younger generation.  Instagram has shown that 90% of their 150 million users are under the age of 35.  Two main trends that are associated with Instagram are Throwback Thursday and Selfies.  The second most liked picture had 1.82 million likes.  The site also lets you have fun with the pictures you post.  You can post “as is” or you can add a Hudson filter (creates an “icy” illusion) or a Rise filter (adds a glow to the image).  I have only listed two but there are over 20 different filters that a person can use.

The site also lets you post short videos (up to 15 seconds). A new feature for Instagram is Boomerang.  This allows you to shoot a one-second burst of five photos that is then turned into a silent video.

The first site I reviewed was Tumblr which is great for the museum to post upcoming events or explanations of the history of the museum.  However, Instagram would be a great source for the museum to show pictures of children and families having fun at the museum.  It can show their creations, science projects, fundraising events, or Birthday parties that are held at the museum.  One site gives information and explains who the museum is and this site shows the fun you can have at the museum.

  1. Dina,
I like how you tied Tumblr and Instagram together to make a complete social media marketing campaign. I don't have an Instagram account, but if you could post short videos or the boomerang delio, it seems like you could pique potential visitors interest without giving away to much and entice them to visit. Having a younger audience is something that would also help your NPO.

  2. What is also nice about Instagram, is the fact that the sharing of photos between other social media sites is seamless and simple. The name Insta-gram gives suggestion to the instant sharing capabilities this site has potential for with many businesses/NPO's.
