Module 5 - Post 1 - Tumblr

Module 5 - Post 1 - Tumblr

I looked at the social media site of Tumblr.  At first I was a little leary if this would be an appropriate social media site for my NPO, Kearney Children's Museum; however, the more I dug into it the better I liked it.  Tumblr is a blog posting site.  It hosts over 250 million blogs and has over 122 billion posts.  A person is able to post test, photos, quotes, links, music, video and images.  You can post using your computer, smartphone or email.

While the blogs seem fairly easy to post, I do believe to make this site a success a person needs to be creative.  The blogs that caught my attention were the ones with moving pictures, catch phrases as a title or large fun pictures.  The museum can post blogs on happenings of the day, special events, children interacting with different characters, etc.   The blog can also be serious about the need for volunteers or fundraising.  I think the list is endless of what this site can be used for.

I realize that blogs are listed as platforms that should not be reviewed but I believe Tumblr is not your typical blog site.  Many blog sites are focused on a one person's postings.  Tumblr is a site for all different kinds of blogs from all different types.  Some postings come from normal people others are tied to corporations such as IBM, Universal Music, iTunes, LA Times, Vanity Fair, Alexander McQueen, J Crew, ABC World News, Comedy Central, Foursquare, Huffington Post and many more.  There are also other museums on Tumblr such as The Children's Museum of Indianapolis, Upper Peninsula Children's Museum and Portland Children's Musem.

  1. It is a great blog site! I am not a blogger, but I do know a few people that do blog and use this site. I think it seems like any easy site to use and the functionality of it is pretty simple. I also would be more into reading blogs that had an eye catching title, or picture or just a fun text or colors. I think this would be a great place for your NPO to use for different things...post about upcoming events, blog about the history of the children's museum, or blog about the theme. I think most children's museums does a theme in part of the exhibits...farm, apples, etc. There are so many ways to use Tumblr. It might be hard getting many to read a long blog post, so I think keeping them short and simple will be key!

  2. I also think Tumblr would be a great site for a museum. Ashley brings up a great point though in keeping your blogs short, or incredibly interesting so you don't lose people's interest. Coming up with those eye-catching themes could take some time, but if you had the right person on it, it wouldn't take much. I had no idea tumblr was that big. I thought it was a tiny blog site.
