Remember asking someone out over and email in middle
school? Then over a text in high school when texting first became big? Well how
about proposing over twitter? This article was about an interview with a couple
that had gotten engaged over twitter, both his question and her answer were
tweeted to each other. Relationships are getting accessible from further and
further distances with the Internet and the multiple platforms to communicate
such as Skype and Whatsapp, or in this case, Twitter. Twitter is one of the
couple’s favorite and most used form of communication resulting in tweeting
each other while in the same room. In a large amount of cases social media
can tear couples apart in subtle ways, but in this case it brought some people
together, regardless of how opposite of social norms it is.
David,
ReplyDeleteWhen I first read the article, I was shocked. This type of proposal is definitely not the social norm, as you put it. However, if they have found a way to keep their long distance relationship alive then good for them. It seems that social media has helped couples keep long distance relationships alive, but when does it become excessive? I am sure that this line is different for everyone, and if social media is helping a relationship grow, then why fix what isn't broken?
I found this article very interesting and think that it is great that couples are able to keep in contact and make long distance relationships work through social media. I did however find the part about them being in the same room and tweeting to each other to be kind of odd. It makes me wonder if their relationship will still work once they no longer have to communicate through Twitter. I think that it would be possible that once they have to begin communicating in person it may be strange for the couple and may lead to problems for them.
ReplyDeleteThis is a very interesting article. Using social media as a way to communicate is great, but using it to replace moments that should be done in person is terrible. Social media takes the intimacy out of situations. There aren't any memories associated with a situation such as this done via social media. Using social media irresponsibly like this is a shame.
