Colby Wurst, Module 5, Blog #2

Ello is a new social media site launched in 2014.  They are a social media site similar to Facebook, but they explicitly state they are against any form of forced advertising.  They even have a manifesto outlining their hatred of forced advertising and criticize other social media sites for forcing it on their members.  Ello is free, and while I haven't ever been on the site, from the reviews I read it seems easy to use.  I don't believe however that it would be worth The Kearney World Theatre's time to become a member and set it up for advertising.  They still have a very small audience and wouldn't reach many customers.  It wouldn't be hard to create a page if it does become a major site, and so I would recommend waiting.  The Kearney World Theatre is doing a good job of advertising on the three sites they do use.  They don't need to change anything until a new site gains popularity.  They have what you could call a sticky customer base.  There customers are usually repeats who have an interest in acting, and will show up whether they advertise on a new social media site or not.

  1. In a world of hipsters, Ello seems to be the social media site that is attempting to go against the grain. It will be interesting to see how they can survive/grow without advertising. By not using advertising, they discourage the use of their site by businesses. A smart business owner is not going to waste their time on something that doesn't advertise.

  2. I think it's great the Ello is against force advertising but I wonder how long it will be before they change their minds? Many of these "free" sites make their money from the advertising. Ello is still fairly small so they probably don't care that much; however, if they ever do explode with new users, I think they'll start selling advertising space to make the money.
