Has "social" media become more selfish? Has social media become a place of mostly bragging about oneself, and fishing for "Likes?" For most people instead of boosting social self-esteem, and enhancing relationships, it is something that people will lose sleep over to check in the middle of the night. Actual face-to-face interaction is decreasing. However, families are staying connected, and people are sharing news of joy with their friends, no matter how intimately they know each one of them. This quote from the author brings up a good point when it comes to someone trying to determine if social media is a positive or negative tool.
"Given the power, it’s up to the individual to determine how to use it: On one hand, you have the annoying, snobby girl from high school posting selfies, being all like “OMG yoga in the morning then froyo and shopping at LV with my bestiess!!”. On the other, your friend who just got the job she’s been stressing about for a month, celebrating."
That's just it... It's up to the individual. People need to learn how to show their own humility, maturity, self-worth, and joy in an appropriate way.
Luke, this quote is so true in all aspects of technology today! Weather it is a blog, Facebook or even a basic text message. The way that we conduct ourselves is vital, this is also true for face-to-face interactions. I don't think that technology is the problem it is how we conduct ourselves while using the technology!
ReplyDeleteThis is a very accurate article. I've seen numerous people who are constantly posting pictures or statuses in order to get "likes." I believe they do this in an attempt to make their lives seem better than they actually are. When social media is used as a way to interact rather than a way to brag it is great, but otherwise it's a very negative environment.
