http://www.mainlinetoday.com/Blogs/Thinking-Forward/February-2014/Can-Too-Much-Social-Media-Cause-Depression/

Although this article does not give the specific research, it does state that too much social media has been shown to cause depression.  Although I am a supporter of theory that too much social media can cause depression, I am skeptical to say that it causes it. Do I think it can cause it, or more specifically can aide in the onset of depression? Yes, very much so. But I digress because that was not the main focus of the article. The article really gives a few basic tips to help keep social media in a healthy position in our lives.
The author gives a brief list of suggested ways to help keep our virtual interactions in check so we can maintain a healthy balance of virtual and actual relationships. Setting a goal for the reasoning one would use social media (SM) is the first tip he gives. This is soo practical and simple. If the reason we use it boils down to "so I can hear about more peoples lives" then that should be a red flag, and leads into another tip: limit the time spent on SM. American culture has extremely low demand (or need) to set limits and boundaries. The culture is get as much as you can, as fast as you can, as easily as you can, but we are starting to learn that excess is not always the most satisfying. So the idea of putting a limit on how much time is spent on SM is health and is a good way to stay balanced with our virtual and actual relationships.

http://health.usnews.com/health-news/family-health/childrens-health/articles/2011/03/28/social-media-has-good-and-bad-effects-on-kids-experts

This article took an in-depth look at the effects of social media on today's youth. It suggests that there are both good and bad effects that can occur. Considering that over half of today's youth logs onto social media sites at least once per day, it's important to understand the effects it can have on them.

The majority of the article was geared towards the positive effects of social media on youth. It stated that social media is a great way for kids to reconnect or "hang out" because of time constraints in today's world. It allows youth to build community and have friends that share similar traits ranging from interests to health conditions. Also, the article suggests that social media is a great way for youth to express their creativity.

On the bad side of things, however, is the impossible to ignore topic of cyberbullying. It's very prevalent and despite society's best efforts it will continue to be. This can deplete someone's self esteem rather quickly if it is a persistent problem. Also, sexting is something that often occurs via social media. This can lead back to the topic of cyberbullying because social media allows anything shared with someone to be broadcast to the entire world.

Overall, this article presented very valid points on both sides of the topic. Once again, social media is a fantastic tool in today's society, but shouldn't be abused.

The article that I posted and will be talking about has to do with Insagram and how companies are using it to help market their products and or services.  The article talks about three new ways companies should be using their Instagram.  The first way is with branded Hashtags, these are not just the companies names but what they are promoting, and the lifestyles of the customers they want to portray.  With branded Hashtags the companies can see what the consumers are up to while using the product or service the company is providing.  The company may also "regarm" one of these branded hashtages to show they like the picture. The next way companies are using Instagram as a marketing tool is through lifestyle content.  Lifestyle content is content that represents their brands persona.  So if they are an outdoor company they may use pictures of a forest or a mountain.  The final way companies are using Instagram is by using Instagram influencers. Instagram influencers are just what they sound like, people on Instagram that have a big fallowing that can reach many people.  Companies are sending these influencers product hoping that it is mentioned in a post.

I picked this article because I think that more companies should be using Instagram to help them market their products better.  I also picked it because I use Instagram and when I was watching the introductions I did not remember many people saying that they have/use a Instagram account.

For my second article, I decided to choose this article, from the New York Times, about the effect of social media on news.  First, the article gives an example of the death of the lion Cecil who was killed by an American hunter. By the middle of August social media was exploding with posts, blogs, and articles about what had happened. The premise of the article uses this example to show how social media takes attention away from the news industry. I feel the made argument of this article is to teach individuals that social media is great, but not everything post on social media is comparable to the news companies. Everything online and in the news needs to be taken with a grain of salt and not just followed without thought.

Blog Post #2-Sasha Mettenbrink

The article I found for this post discusses a post made by Kim Kardashian promoting a morning sickness drug, The FDA said though that this post does not give information about the  risks that are associated with the drug. This article reveals the dangers that can come along with using social media if we believe everything that others post, especially people who are famous that are promoting a certain product. Often times post can leave out relevant information that can be extremely important for a person to know. This is relevant because we need to know how to do our own research on a product to find out everything about it and not believe everything that we see on social media.

The last article I feel like is really important  to understand especially for me since I graduate this year. This article talks about the do's and don'ts with social media. Out of the 25 examples in this article There were a couple that really stood out to me. First is make sure you do not use slang and that you use correct grammar with your accounts so it makes you look professional. Second is to only have one account so that people are not confused which one is actually you. Third is that you think before you tag someone or something in your posts. This could make you or someone you tag look bad to others and not professional.

The link above is to an article that talks about how headhunters are using social media to look for potential employees. The article states that some people may not consider a job until they have been offered the opportunity. LinkedIn seems to be the major social media site that the article talks about. I don't know much about LinkedIn as I just got an account at the beginning of the semester. The little that I have looked at it I can see how it could help find a career for someone. It just goes to show how much social media is changing and how useful it can be.
