When thinking about social media and the affect it has on
our society, I feel that taking a look at how it affects children and
adolescents is a key topic. I searched and read articles about social media and
children, finding one titled “The Impact of Social Media on Children, Adolescence
and Families the lead authors are Gwenn Schurgin O’Keeffe, MD and Kathleen
Clarke-Pearson, MD. At the beginning they state that social and online activity
has been beneficial for adolescence. It is stated that it enhances or helps
develop communication skills, social connection and emotional development. This
gives them more learning opportunities and give kids connections with others
that have common interests or hobbies. With these given benefits, there are
also some risks involved. The article had touched on many of the different
aspects of safety, issues that may arise such as cyber bullying, sexting, “Facebook
depression” and many others. It states ways that parents can stay informed from
their children, doctors/pediatricians and even gave a few links for resources.
