This article discusses the increasing usage of social media within healthcare. It has begun to become more prevalent because it allows individuals with the same health conditions to discuss what treatments they've received and which ones work or not. Social media also allows physicians and other health professionals to discuss the latest trends in medicine with each other as well as share their opinions concerning various topics. Although social media is becoming more prevalent in healthcare, it does carry issues with it. Legal rights are a big concern with this topic. Patient privacy can more easily be compromised via social media. Healthcare facilities are tasked with making sure that their patient files are unable to be tampered with. Also, if a healthcare professional is giving medical advice they need to ensure that the person is within a state that they are licensed or else there will be consequences. These can range anywhere from being sued to losing their license to practice.
This topic is relevant to the module because it discusses how social media has become more prevalent in our lives. Not only are people able to make more connections online, they are also able to gain access to businesses and healthcare. This expands the reach for anyone who uses it.
