Dina Dowden - Module 1 - Article 3 - More elderly people using social media, but many don’t know what they’re doing.

More elderly people using social media, but many don’t know what they’re doing.

The article look at the statistics of male/female users of Facebook and Twitter along with the different age groups.  The biggest growth of users on Facebook are the people over the age of 50 (parents and grandparents) while Twitter is become the younger person’s go to social site.  They believe this is attributed to our youth becoming more mobile (smartphones) and Twitter is primarily a mobile service.
I found this article funny but true.  Even though I am not considered part of the younger generation (I’m 45) my mother calls me weekly to help her figure out her Facebook account.  She joined Facebook to keep up with her granddaughters (my nieces) and now my nieces would rather use Twitter or Instagram because there are too many old people on Facebook.  I think it also shows how fast things can change.  Right now Twitter is the social media of choice for the younger generation (it used to be Facebook) but eventually us old people will start joining Twitter to keep in touch and the younger generation will move on to the next big thing.  It is a never ending cycle.
