Tamika Ross/Mod1/Article #1/Norristown police reach out to residents through social media

The article that I’ve selected talks about how the Norristown police department is using social media to help make communities safe.  Who wouldn’t love to play a part in helping their neighborhood become a safer place to live?  This type of action will bring communities together and keep the crime rate down.  The department’s main goal is to build trust and provide effective communication between residents and police by using network such as: Nextdoor.com, CrimeMapping.com, Facebook and Twitter.

I chose this article because it displays that social media can be used in a positive way. However, many people have valid reasons for disliking social media. This article provides insight  that communities and police can work together to accomplish a common goal by the use of social media.

  1. Often times when we think of social media we can realize the negatives that it has and not always the positives. I think it is great that the Norristown police department is beginning to use this technology to keep its community safe. I currently follow the Kearney police department on Facebook and learn about many events and crimes that are happening in the community throughout the day.
