I chose this article because it covers a topic that all of us are familiar with: online classes. We're all taking this course online so I thought it would be interesting to see the overall impact of social media on education. The main point of the article is that social media is becoming much more prevalent in today's society in regards to education. This is because it allows both students and faculty to easily share information or see what topic is currently trending in the world. Social media also allows us to complete video blog posts as we already have for this class. It's a great way to get to know who somebody is in such a simple way.
Despite all of the advantages of using social media in education, the article also depicts certain disadvantages that it may pose. If a student is involved with a large variety of social media platforms they make become overwhelmed in trying to keep up with each of them. Also, a big problem was academic integrity. The school has no way to prove whether or not the actual student was the one to complete an assignment or if they utilized an outside source.
Overall, social media can be very advantageous in learning. The key thing to remember is to use it sparingly as it can quickly become overwhelming for both students and teachers alike.
This is the first semester that I have taken online classes, and I have to say that personally the positives out way the negatives. Taking online courses have given me more time to work. Even though using social media for online courses has worked well for me thus far, I do understand why the article mentioned disadvantages when it comes to online courses. I would like to think that by the time students are in college they would be able to handle the responsibility of having an online class. Unfortunately, this is not the case all of the time. Also, the feeling of being overwhelmed by social media is an excellent point. However, with the upcoming generations growing up with social media, this may become less of a problem.
