When thinking about social media and the affect it has on
our society, I feel that taking a look at how it affects children and
adolescents is a key topic. I searched and read articles about social media and
children, finding one titled “The Impact of Social Media on Children, Adolescence
and Families the lead authors are Gwenn Schurgin O’Keeffe, MD and Kathleen
Clarke-Pearson, MD. At the beginning they state that social and online activity
has been beneficial for adolescence. It is stated that it enhances or helps
develop communication skills, social connection and emotional development. This
gives them more learning opportunities and give kids connections with others
that have common interests or hobbies. With these given benefits, there are
also some risks involved. The article had touched on many of the different
aspects of safety, issues that may arise such as cyber bullying, sexting, “Facebook
depression” and many others. It states ways that parents can stay informed from
their children, doctors/pediatricians and even gave a few links for resources.

Above is a link to an article titled How Social Media Ruined Marketing. The article starts off by talking about social media in general and some of sights, such as Twitter and Facebook. The article then goes into talking about how social media ads are lazy. For instance the author talks about how ads are going over the 30 second mark, which I take as companies aren't taking the time to weed out any unnecessary information like they used too. One major aspect from this article that I took away was that companies are trying to read into likes and views too much. This meaning that just because someone liked a post about a company doesn't mean they are going to buy merchandise from that store. I can see what the article is trying to say and I agree with not reading too much into likes and views, but on the other hand getting the company name out there could bring in potential customers. I think this article could be helpful in the class later when social media marketing comes up.

The title of the article sums up a base for the main points covered. I chose this article because it offers both sides of the argument. The article begins by setting aside all of the information out there about social media and wants the reading to focus on their own opinion. This approach is one of the main reasons I wanted to share this article because I want people to make their own opinions from the facts presented and not outside opinions that are often irrelevant. Megan gives an example of the social and anti-social movement and links to books supporting one side or the other. As the article progresses she talks about the concept in chapter one of our textbook. She discusses the idea of businesses overuse of social media and how it is impacting the professional world. Even with the backlash at the business world’s overuse with social media she concludes that an overall balance of social media and face to face communication is the path to strive for.

5 Threats To Your Security When Using Social Media
I found the article "5 Threats To Your Security When Using Social Media," and thought it was relevant to social media because lets face it we all think that we are being totally safe on the net. Honestly I knew of the disadvantages of social media when it comes to security but many of the things in this article I truly had no idea about. This article describes five things ranging from having your identity stolen to inadvertently letting stalkers find you. The article gives advise to keep yourself and those that you care about safe while taking full advantage of social media. Throughout the article we can come to understand just how smart and sneaky some hackers and predators can be.

Alex Obermier module 1 article 2
In my second article it talks about how social media can really influence individuals in a wrong way. I thought this was really interesting because I thought I could relate to it. In the article it talks about how social media can get you to spend more money, change your appetite, independence, self esteem, and real life conversations. I feel like this is very true at least for me. I may see some new clothes or gear that I think I would like and I go and buy it. Social media can be bad with how small things can influence a person to do something that they would not normally do, and keep them from making decisions on their own. Also with people interacting on social media they are not interacting with people face to face, which can hinder them from learning how to have an engaging conversation in person.

The article that I selected discusses how person can reveal information about themselves and display who they are not only through the items that the person post, but also through the items that they like. On Facebook people are able to like pages, movies, music, organizations, friends posts, and many other items. A person can get a good idea of your personality and what kinds of interests that you have. With being close to graduation we will begin applying for jobs where often times employers view our profiles and be able to view the likes that we have. This is why I think that this post is relevant to this class because social media pages could cause a person to not get a job if they have undesirable or inappropriate likes on their page. How a person displays themselves outside of the workplace is extremely important to businesses since the person will also represent their company.

Tamika Ross/Mod1/Article #1/Norristown police reach out to residents through social media
The article that I’ve selected talks about how the
Norristown police department is using social media to help make communities safe. Who wouldn’t love to play a part in helping their
neighborhood become a safer place to live?
This type of action will bring communities together and keep the crime
rate down. The department’s main goal is
to build trust and provide effective communication between residents and police
by using network such as: Nextdoor.com, CrimeMapping.com, Facebook and Twitter.
I chose this article because it displays that social media
can be used in a positive way. However, many people have valid reasons for disliking
social media. This article provides insight that communities and police
can work together to accomplish a common goal by the use of social media.

China P2P lender banks on social media usage

This article discusses the Chinese company that is using people's social media activity as a way to decide whether to lend them money or not. This is a useful tool for the large consumer base in China that does not have the financial activity that is measured by the current standards. The company views a person's high social media use as an indication that applicant cares about their reputation and integrity. Online game purchases are also used in the algorithm that helps them decide.
I picked this article because I found it very interesting that the way that social media has evolved. It is not really something that I ever thought might affect a person's credit rating, but this is becoming a reality in China.
Dina Dowden - Module 1 - Article 3 - More elderly people using social media, but many don’t know what they’re doing.
More elderly people using social media, but many don’t know
what they’re doing.
The article look at the statistics of male/female users of
Facebook and Twitter along with the different age groups. The biggest growth of users on Facebook are
the people over the age of 50 (parents and grandparents) while Twitter is
become the younger person’s go to social site.
They believe this is attributed to our youth becoming more mobile (smartphones)
and Twitter is primarily a mobile service.
I found this article funny but true. Even though I am not considered part of the
younger generation (I’m 45) my mother calls me weekly to help her figure out
her Facebook account. She joined
Facebook to keep up with her granddaughters (my nieces) and now my nieces would
rather use Twitter or Instagram because there are too many old people on
Facebook. I think it also shows how fast
things can change. Right now Twitter is
the social media of choice for the younger generation (it used to be Facebook)
but eventually us old people will start joining Twitter to keep in touch and
the younger generation will move on to the next big thing. It is a never ending cycle.

I chose this article because it covers a topic that all of us are familiar with: online classes. We're all taking this course online so I thought it would be interesting to see the overall impact of social media on education. The main point of the article is that social media is becoming much more prevalent in today's society in regards to education. This is because it allows both students and faculty to easily share information or see what topic is currently trending in the world. Social media also allows us to complete video blog posts as we already have for this class. It's a great way to get to know who somebody is in such a simple way.
Despite all of the advantages of using social media in education, the article also depicts certain disadvantages that it may pose. If a student is involved with a large variety of social media platforms they make become overwhelmed in trying to keep up with each of them. Also, a big problem was academic integrity. The school has no way to prove whether or not the actual student was the one to complete an assignment or if they utilized an outside source.
Overall, social media can be very advantageous in learning. The key thing to remember is to use it sparingly as it can quickly become overwhelming for both students and teachers alike.

Social Media is Making You Stupid-blog #2
http://time.com/9207/social-media-is-making-you-stupid/
A new study published by the Journal of the Royal Society Interface suggests that the use of social media can actually make one more stupid. Supposedly, it is not the idea that playing games, messaging, stalking ex-boyfriends, and poking people is dulling our senses. Our IQ's are dropping because of our lack of original ideas. So many people are posting their political and religious beliefs along with their opinions on Coke vs. Pepsi that we are supposedly losing our ability to decide for ourselves. Maybe instead of reading the posts of manic homophobes on Facebook we should truly be educating ourselves with some reliable sources. We are all students, maybe we should use our academic library to gain some insight into these topics.
The research that was done in able to come to this conclusion consisted of volunteers utilizing two forms of social networking. One was a more closed system and the other was more tightly knit in which all of the participants were able to connect. Then, the participants from each group were given standardized tests. The group of tightly-knit "friends" had higher scores, but this was not due to actually learning the material. These participants were copying the answers of others.
As a group, this could be a positive outcome. However, for individuals is can deplete one's ability to think analytically and make decisions.

The second article that I came across is about the good and the bad of social media. The first part of the article intrigued me. The author talked about how he went to a public speaker who spoke about how we used to keep diaries. We would write down our feelings, thoughts, and actions hoping that no one would read them. Nowadays, people write down these same things, wanting people to see them. It has become extremely important to get as many "likes" as we can on a post, that at one time we wanted to keep private.
Before getting to far in this class, I would hope that we all take a look at the good and bad aspects of social media. It is an excellent tool in communicating with others about thoughts and possible dangers that may be happening within our community. However, there are some negative aspects as well, such as not being aware of the physical world around us. How ever you view social media, there are undoubtedly negative and positive outcomes that derive from it.

This article first caught my eye, while I was looking through my newsfeed on Facebook. This article is about a fourteen year old boy named Kim Sung-jin, who decided to daily record himself eating dinner. Kim uses an application called Afreeca TV, which is a social media platform used by many teenagers in South Korea. This young man, not only records himself eating dinner for fun, but also makes about $1,700 an episode. Much like users of YouTube, Instagram, or other social media applications, Afreeca TV seems to be the new rage in Kim's neck of the woods. Initially, Kim started eating on live broadcast so that he wouldn't have to eat alone. Since his parents worked in a different city, and he didn't feel comfortable eating as early as his grandparents, Kim resorted to his webcam. I think that this article is relevant to social media, because Kim is using social media for entertainment, as well as income.

This article shows a very important part of the upcoming 2016 election: getting voters votes. The article talked about how presidential candidates are using social networking to connect to voters. This will be an extremely good way to connect. For example if I wanted to view a campaign stop in Chicago, I don't have the time or money to book a flight or drive to Chicago. However, some campaigners are live streaming their events so I could see them. Campaigners should also do this for the laziness of voters. It's much easier for me to take a quick look at Facebook and see a Hilary Clinton ad then to go to Clinton's website to see her issues. I think that social media will have a big influence in the campaign.

"Murder on social media: Killer wanted the world to watch"
This article is about the killer that was posting on twitter right as he was shooting three people during an interview. The killer (Vester Lee Flanagan) was angry because he had been fired from the station in 2013. He obviously wanted some attention, and after posting on Twitter, he posted videos of himself as he shot the three victims.
I decided to post this article because it shows the power of social media, and how it can be used in a negative way. There are definitely good outcomes from social media, but in this incident, it was a medium for a sick person to boost his ego and try to get revenge.

An article that was posted earlier this month, Most Say Social Media Time As Good As Real Life, suggests that time spent with friends on social media is just as valuable as time spent face to face. This article stated that they got their information from a report, however the report was not clear on whether there was a preferred form of interaction with others. Most of the people the article quoted stated that there is no replacement for face to face communication. However, that does not take away from the fact that social media is still appreciated. Since real life and social media are interconnected it does make sense that each are valuable.
This article connects with what we are learning within this first module because I would think that most of us use social media one way or another; whether that be using social media for personal use like forming friendships or for professional gain. How we view social networking compared to face to face interaction may be something to take into consideration.

This article is split up into a couple different categories and the area I was focused on was the "Pros and Cons of Social Networking". After reading through each argument whether it be a pro or a con I have to say that I agree with every single one of them. For instance on one of the cons they talk about how easily false information can spread, which is very true, that leads to rumors and then it always turns out that someone gets hurt. One of the pros talked about how law enforcement uses social media to track down criminals. Being as a majority of criminals aren't the brightest bulbs in the box they could "check in" on Facebook allowing the police to help hunt him down.

The Good and the Bad of Social Media for kids
I found the article "Facebook, Twitter, Social Networking: Good or Bad for Kid's Brain," and found that it was a good article because it had to do with the good and the bad of social media for younger students because I think it is important one because I am going to be working with students in the educational sphere but also because I feel that it is important for young kids as well as their parents to be involved in their media lives. Yes we all know that there are good and bad things when it comes to social media, but given the right material kids and parents can learn to use social media to explore the far reaches of this world. This article gives a full description of what the negatives of social media such as sexual predators, and decreased face-to-face interaction but it also gives a full list of the positives of social media. The positives are that kids interact more than ever and students are learning in a more peer to peer based learning. The major thing that I really liked about this article was that it also gave how parents can make the most of kids social media usage such as monitoring their time as well as pushing kids to spend more time in the real world instead of the cyber world. As we can see the line between good and bad social media activity is very vague and blurry line but with the proper education social media can be used for truly glorious reasons.

"How social media has changed our lives for better and for worse". I chose this article because I feel like it is important for individuals in today's world to understand how social media is something that is amazing and very helpful. At the same time it can be very distracting and bad. Some pros that are talked about in the article is how for work it can help you connect with consumers. This could be done by letting the consumer know whats on sale, or based on what they usually buy they may like another item. Also social media can help people have business meetings, but be in complete different locations in the world. The cons to social media is that it can be used as a distraction in the work place. Another con is that a lot of information can be let out about you through social media that could get in the wrong hands. Such as where you are who you are with. Overall is social media a bad thing? No, not at all but it can be used in a negative way if in the wrong hands.

I chose this article because it shows a greater glimpse into the effect social media has on health and wellness. As a personal trainer, I utilize various apps and social media to allow me to both do my job and work on my own personal fitness. With advancements in technology basically anyone can access a treasure trove of exercise/diet related information instantly. It has never been easier than now to learn various techniques or what exercise will work what muscle and so on.
The great part about social media and fitness is that it gives people a way to connect and hold each other accountable with what they are supposed to be doing. Fitness and health are often most easily achieved when you embark on the journey with someone other than yourself. Apps such as MyFitnessPal allow people to track their diets and share the results with anyone that they're friends with. The majority of these apps also allow the user to sign in via their Facebook accounts which unlocks even more potential for making connections. This can help people to succeed on their fitness journeys.
Nothing can be perfect, however. The Internet and social media may allow people to connect, but it also leaves room for failure. Not all articles are created equally in regards to authenticity or accuracy which can often lead someone who isn't knowledgeable astray. The key is to find reliable sources for information so improper technique or fad diets don't harm innocent people who are just trying to better themselves. Aside from this, however, I do believe that using social media to help with improving health is a great tool that will only continue to improve with time.

The key is to find reliable sources for information so improper technique or fad diets don't harm innocent people who are just trying to better themselves. Aside from this, however, I do believe that using social media to help with improving health is a great tool that will only continue to improve with time.

Briana Pontious - Module 1 Blog Post 1
The article I chose is, "Twitter Critics Take on LAPD After NY Police Hit on Social Media". This article is about how the New York police officers plan for social praise backfired on them. The New York Police Department asked around for people to post praiseful status' and photos about the police officers and the department using the hashtag #myNYPD. This took a wrong turn when people started posting negative things about the officers and bashing them on social media. Word spread about this and went all the way to Los Angeles where people began posting negative things about the LAPD using the hashtag #myLAPD. Photos of police officers were posted with negative comments and one officer was even accused of murder and attempt of murder. When questioned the LAPD just said it was a way for people post how they really feel.
I chose this article because I think it shows the true way people use social media. It seems that these days people only use social media to spread negative things and hide behind their computers to say things they wouldn't normally say. I also don't know if I agree with the police departments asking for praise over social media. Why would they need extra praise or have to ask for it if they are doing their jobs well in the first place?

Colby Wurst, Module 1, Blog Post 2, New Social Media Companies
I found this article describing some of the new and upcoming social media start ups and was highly intrigued. NOKNOK was one that caught my attention as it let you look at how other people saved you on their phone. I personally don't think I would want to know how others save me on their phones as it could cause problems or hurt feelings. Some of them though were very well thought out such as Unmetric which shows how well your marketing is doing compared to your competition. It's amazing what people are thinking of. I hope you guys like looking through this!

"How to Use Social Networking to Succeed in Business" really caught my eye because honestly, who doesn't want to succeed? Reading the article I found some good points, as a future employee of a company it is hard to find a job on your own. It is a lot easier to find a job when you know someone within the company that can "put in a good word" for you so your foot is already in the door, networking. Being acquainted with friends, peers on social media sites allows you to reach out to them if you know they have a job with a company that you'd like to potentially work for, and with the click of a mouse you can network with them and start to build a relationship that will allow you to maybe find employment. It works from a managers standpoint as well, when in the hiring process after an employee interviews you can pull up their social media profile and look into what kind of person they are outside of work; it may show you that they are not the kind of person you would like representing your company. i thought this was a very good read and it showed me some insight as to how social networking can benefit you in the "real world".

Social Media Beneficial to Overall Health of Elderly
http://www.theguardian.com/media/2014/dec/12/study-finds-social-media-skype-facebook-use-beneficial-overall-health-elderly
This article discusses the positive impact of social media on the geriatric community. As most people know, the older generations aren't as skilled with technology and it can be frustrating to teach them how to run it smoothly. However, research from the UK suggests that taking that time to help them understand social media can help sharpen their cognitive capacity as well as physical and mental well-being. The participants in this study were given access and direction to use Facebook and Skype. The researchers found that the individuals that participated in this study felt less isolated due to their connection with family and others with similar interests. There were even testimonies that social media changed the participants' lives and brought some fun back to them. This is a great example of how social media can enhance lives versus take them over.

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2548460-clemson-football-bans-players-from-using-social-media-during-regular-season
Social media has been a growing problem for athletes in the recent times. Athletes are often quoted on sport center via tweet! It seems as if people look for anything to damage the reputation of an athlete. However, with that being said, I also believe many of those athletes who had there names drug through the mud got what they deserved for there irrational posts. Thats why I think Clemson's decision to ban social media from there athletes during season is a very smart one. This completely eliminates any potential issues making things far easier not only on the athletes but the university as a whole. Being an athlete can be kind of tricky in public settings, as you are constantly under the microscope. Social media is exactly the same and I think other programs should consider implementing the same policies as Clemson.

I chose to look up an article dealing with the use of social media by non-profit organizations. I work for a small museum that is a non-profit and I use a lot of social media for free advertising and as a way to connect with other car lovers. This article was interesting and very helpful. I didn't even think about ending my posts in question marks or using questions to generate more feedback and to reach more people. I guess when you think about it that really makes sense because people are likely to have different solutions to the problem and maybe even argue back and forth in the comments and that will cause the post to show up on more people's timelines. I do however post a lot of photos to the museums page and those posts do get significantly more likes. This probably has to do with how people like to learn, like, visual, readers, or hands on people. This article was very eye opening for me and generated a lot of thought.

Luke Friesen Blog post 3: Managing Yourself: What's Your Personal Social Media Strategy?
https://hbr.org/2010/11/managing-yourself-whats-your-personal-social-media-strategy
This article gives the two extremes of how social media can help or hurt businesses when not used properly. The writer tells three benefits to the use of social media. First, it is a low-cost method of reaching people to build your brand. Second, it allows rapid interaction with people within your professional circle and to network your skills to people who may have resources to help you. Lastly, social media allows for learning from easily accessible information and evaluation of your product/service. People will post opinions, positive or negative, to social media sites, and this will allow the owner to evaluate in real-time how his success is rated and perceived. The author also gives the risks to social media use, and how professional accounts may need to be separate from business accounts. The title of the article is "Managing Yourself: What's Your Personal Social Media Strategy?" which is very appropriate for businessmen and women, politicians, and young professionals looking for jobs.

Luke Friesen: Blog Post 2: Module 1: Political Power of Social Media
https://www.foreignaffairs.com/articles/2010-12-20/political-power-social-media
The intro to this article reports the impact of the use of social media and technology to rally people for a cause. This cause was to oust a national leader. Anyone in politics cannot make a statement without being immediately quoted on social media for everyone to read, and for people to respond. This could be a good thing for some, and detrimental to others. Politics and governmental affairs are more "participatory" than before, because the public now can respond in real time to politician's remarks. The combination of photoshop skills and rapid outreach of social media can misrepresent a situation or person to a lot of people in a very short amount of time. Political leaders can quickly organize a rally within minutes by simply sending out a tweet or post. As we've seen in politics recently, people like Hillary Clinton have gotten into trouble with security issues of social media, especially email. Political leaders can also shelter entire countries based on what they allow via social media sites. Sites like YouTube have been completely banned in some countries.

Ethan Young - Module #1 Social Media
In the attached article the title is what really caught my eye "Social Media is making you Stupid". Now just think about that, we are all on our phones 70% of the day (and lets be honest, we aren't always being productive while on them) making us not have to engage regularly in a face to face conversation. In the article they performed a study of making up five social networking sites and putting groups of people in each site. After using the site for awhile they were given a set of questions to find out if which type of social network site really had any effect on your IQ. They found that the group of people on the social networking site that allowed you to see what others posted just hurried up and changed theirs to conform to the right answer. I think that social media is a necessary evil, we have grown accustomed to it and it has great qualities about it but people become addicted to it.

Is Social Media Sabotaging Real Communication?
http://www.forbes.com/sites/susantardanico/2012/04/30/is-social-media-sabotaging-real-communication/
The article looks at how studies show that very little of our communication is based on actually speaking but instead is based on body language. Social media can be deceiving as people hide behind an image that they have created themselves. The article stresses how social media can actually make us less social as people would rather email or instant message than stop by and talk face to face.
I liked this article because it shows a generation gap that is getting wider. I'm in my forties and would prefer a phone call or to meet face to face while my younger co-workers would prefer to email or text me. There needs to be a new rule book put in place to help both sides understand social media. Does all capitalization mean you are yelling? What exactly do all the acronyms, abbreviations, slang and hashtags mean? I used to be able to get a feeling on how people thought by watching them and now we need to base it off of typed letters.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/joannabelbey/2015/01/21/how-healthcare-can-use-social-media-effectively-and-compliantly/
This article discusses the increasing usage of social media within healthcare. It has begun to become more prevalent because it allows individuals with the same health conditions to discuss what treatments they've received and which ones work or not. Social media also allows physicians and other health professionals to discuss the latest trends in medicine with each other as well as share their opinions concerning various topics. Although social media is becoming more prevalent in healthcare, it does carry issues with it. Legal rights are a big concern with this topic. Patient privacy can more easily be compromised via social media. Healthcare facilities are tasked with making sure that their patient files are unable to be tampered with. Also, if a healthcare professional is giving medical advice they need to ensure that the person is within a state that they are licensed or else there will be consequences. These can range anywhere from being sued to losing their license to practice.
This topic is relevant to the module because it discusses how social media has become more prevalent in our lives. Not only are people able to make more connections online, they are also able to gain access to businesses and healthcare. This expands the reach for anyone who uses it.

https://www.eonetwork.org/octane-magazine/special-features/social-media-networks-facilitate-identity-theft-fraud
Identity theft is quite often a topic that is frequently overlooked, however, it was one of the most prevalent crimes in America today. Its kind of a gut wrenching thought really, Some person out there million miles away is pretending to be you all because of the information you posted on your Facebook or Twitter accounts. Its very surprising that all "phishers" really need any more are your full name and birth date to get there foot in the door for a plethora of potential criminal activities. this article said it best saying, "Ninety-five percent of Facebook profiles have atlas one application that can be used for malicious criminal activity." Is it only a matter of time before a situation similar those in this article make headline news?

Hello Class, this is my first blog post.
I chose the article linked below because it relates to something I have been working with recently. I work at a bank and they are pushing the upcoming Loan Officers to get on social media and differentiate themselves from the competition. This article summarizes the Bank's feelings. The article states that the Financial Industry has been slow to integrate social media into their everyday culture due to rules and regulations that are hard to navigate around. However recently financial institutions have begun to realize the advantages they can gain by being more than just a cold brick and mortar building people go to. Being able to interact with clients gives them an advantage and makes them more approachable as well as relatable. This article shows social media to be ubiquitous as well. If the heavily regulated financial industry can incorporate it into its everyday life, then it must be ubiquitous.

Nick Meyer- "What happens when a ‘social media murder’ suspect wants to go viral"
I started searching for an article that related to social media, and one of the first articles I saw was this one by the Washington Post. Vester Lee Flanagan committed a crime (shot three people) but he wasn't immediately named a suspect. A few hours after the crime, however, Vester lead the police straight to him. He started Tweeting allegations about the victims. The first few tweets caught the eye of the police, and Vester was named a suspect. After a few Tweets, Vester posted a video that he recorded while shooting the victims on Facebook and Twitter. Both Facebook and Twitter deleted the posts and videos, and removed his account from their servers. It blows my mind that someone would do this in the first place, and especially that they would turn themselves in on social media by admitting guilt. Social media may have many benefits and drawbacks, but I'm not sure if I would consider this a good or a bad use of social media. It is bad because through social media, the criminal got his name out there and everybody heard about him, which is what he wanted. On the other hand, the police found him because he used social media, and they might never have found out who committed the crime if there wasn't social media present.
Luke Friesen: Module 1 Social Media
https://getreferralmd.com/2013/09/healthcare-social-media-statistics/
Since I am planning on pursuing the medical field, I decided to see what the latest statistics are on social media use is within the medical community. This article talks about the striking reality of the growing use and dependence of the millennial generation on social media for health decisions and health care consultation. Some people are more likely to post their health problem on a social media page and see what friends or relatives have to say about it rather than seeing a physician. These people will also post questions and search forums for who is the best physician to consult regarding a specific issue/illness. What I think is interesting from these statistics, and what I have observed myself, is that many more health professionals are using social media and pocket-technology for guidance and reference on medical treatment. We all like to think that healthcare is a team effort (nurse, to PA, PA to doctor, to physical therapist, etc...) and the proper use of social media can enhance medical care. Hospitals can announce public health awareness and proactive care based on what is being seen in the clinic. Whether we like it or not, it is being used more readily to access health information, and to determine health care plans.

Chance Bila- Module 1- article #1Social Media in the Workplace: Does it Impact Productivity?
http://www.lakeforestmba.edu/blog/social-media-workplace-impact-productivity/
Every college student steps on campus with aspirations of one day joining the workforce within their desired career and work place, and in today's day and age social media will inevitably be apart of nearly every workplace across the nation. However tweets and likes generally get a bit of a bad wrap for making employees unproductive and distracted. Which is why this article struck me to be so interesting. I think for anyone in a leadership within a company would find this study to be a bit surprising. I guess i just never thought Facebook or Twitter could actually contribute to better skills within the workplace.

Social Media's Effect on HIPAA Privacy and Security
http://www.healthworkscollective.com/onlinetech/123841/social-media-s-effect-hipaa-privacy-and-security
Since we get a free pass on our topic this module I did some research on healthcare and social media. I work at a small health college in Iowa and social media and healthcare is a huge concern when it comes to our students. In fact just this morning I attended a meeting about training our students on HIPPA violations and how it is so easy for students to pass on patient information, unintentionally, by using social media. Just the comment of "I saw my neighbor Joan at the hospital this morning" can be a violation. Students have also been caught taking selfies and not realizing that a patient can be seen in the background. All shared within seconds by just a click of a button.
However, this article shares how social media can also be a huge help when it comes to healthcare. Healthcare education can be shared more easily to large groups of people using social media and has given nursing students a variety of learning platforms.
The article does a very good job of showing both sides of a very serious and complicated problem. While social media can be used to help educate the masses on healthcare it also has the potential to share confidential information concerning patients that violate HIPPA regulations.
I hope you enjoy the article as I found it very interesting and ties in very well with my job (working for a healthcare college) and shows both sides of social media.
Welcome to the CSIT 338 Blog. This is where we will be doing part of our discussion for the Social Networking course. Just in case, here is a reminder of what you need to do for the first week and beyond:
For odd modules in this course (1, 3, 5, 7), you will be required to post relevant articles to the course blog located at http://csit388.blogspot.com/. The articles you post must relate to social media/networking and also to the topic being discussed during that module. For this opening module, you only need to post articles related to social media/networking (no specific topic need be addressed for Module 1). For each blog post you will need to put a link to the articles you found and then write at least a paragraph explaining the article and why you feel it is relevant to what we are studying in that module. For Module 1, you are only required to post 3 articles. You will need to post 5 articles per module in the future (Modules 2-8). You may not post all of your articles in one day. You will receive credit for only one article per day, so begin early during the modules.
Each of you will be sent an invitation to join this blog as authors, meaning you can post to the blog and comment, but you cannot delete posts or modify posts.
The second part of your assignment will be to comment on at least two other posts from your classmates. These posts should add to the conversation about the articles by expanding on the thoughts expressed by your classmates and asking questions as well. The blog assignments take the place of discussion boards for this course, so these will need to be conversations, not just affirmations such as "good point" or "I agree".
Please use this as a way to discuss relevant aspects of social media. Be considerate of your classmates' opinions and be sure to add to the discussion.
